Untitled (Anxiety) - Beverly Fishman

Beverly Fishman’s work explores abstraction and the history of painting by juxtaposing formal and material investigations with questions about science, technology and the human body. Anxiety is an example of her ongoing study of America’s healthcare system and the industry’s reliance on prescription medication. Anxiety is the leading mental illness in the United States, and Fishman’s visual representation of prescription medication is both familiar and surreal, the shapes taken from familiar uniformly produced pills, but enlarged to an overwhelming size.
