Library Street Collective is pleased to present a group exhibition at The Armory Show (Booth 427), September 8-10, 2023, where we present a selection of works by Tiffany Alfonseca, Allana Clarke, José Parlá, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, Chris Schanck, Gary Tyler, Paul Verdell, and Tyrrell Winston. Encompassing a diverse range of styles and mediums, the featured paintings, sculptures and quilts demonstrate their makers’ collective fascination with the implications of their chosen materials. Each artist looks beyond mere subject matter in an investigation of surface texture and physicality as a vehicle for storytelling.

Los Angeles-based textile artist Gary Tyler will present new self-portraits coming off his first solo exhibition at Library Street Collective in Detroit (Gary Tyler: We are the Willing, July 8, 2023 - September 6, 2023) which comprises figurative quilts that document moments from the 41 ½ years he wrongfully spent in Angola Louisiana State Penitentiary; his work is included in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Museum. The work of Brooklyn-based artist José Parlá is currently on view in a group exhibition, Brooklyn Abstraction: Four Artists, Four Walls, at the Brooklyn Museum, open through July 28, 2024. Following the fair on September 23, 2023, Bronx-based artist Tiffany Alfonseca will open her first exhibition at Library Street Collective in Detroit. Chris Schanck will bring an immersive element into the booth with his inclusion of functional design; Schanck’s most recent museum exhibition was held at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York (February 12, 2022 - January 8, 2023). A strong roster of Detroit-based artists will be represented in the presentation, as well. The work of Jamea Richmond-Edwards will be on view in the group exhibition Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage (September 15 - December 31, 2023) at Frist Art Museum. Tyrrell Winston will debut a new leg of his distinguished ‘Skewer’ series focused on the sport of soccer; Winston opens a new exhibition in Paris, France on September 2, 2023 leading up to the fair. Paul Verdell recently opened his first solo exhibition in Berlin, Germany, on view through August 27, 2023; Allana Clarke’s first institutional solo exhibition, A Particular Fantasy, opened in the fall of 2022 with collaborating installations at Art Omi and Usdan Gallery; she will present new sculptural paintings that express struggle and ritualistic transformation.
